2012 National Wetlands Symposium March 2012

The Southland Wetlands Working Party is helping the National Wetlands Trust of New Zealand to organise the 2012 National Wetlands Symposium.

The symposium is a bi-annual event held in a different region of New Zealand each time. The 2012 symposium will be held 21-23 March 2012 in Invercargill, New Zealand, home to the internationally renowned Ramsar wetlands known as the Awarua wetlands complex and Waituna Lagoon. The theme for the next symposium is Wetlands-Are we getting it right? Presentations and field trips will cover 4 broad categories:

  1. Effective Community Engagement
  2. Regulatory vs. non Regulatory Approaches
  3. Communicating Science to the Public
  4. Integrated Management of Wetlands for Ecosystem Outcomes

Registrations are now open to attend the symposium. Early-bird registration closes on 31 January 2012.

The National Wetland Trust is a non-profit organisation established in 1999 to increase the appreciation of wetlands and their values by all New Zealanders.

The Trust aims are to:

  • Increase public knowledge and appreciation of wetland values
  • Increase understanding of wetland functions and processes
  • Ensure landowners and government agencies commit to wetland protection, enhancement and restoration

The symposium is a bi-annual event held in a different region of New Zealand each time. The symposium committee is now calling for abstracts from potential presenters. November 2003

Doug McKenzie-Mohr in association with the Waste Management Institute of NZ (WasteMINZ) is planning to run three 1- day workshops  in November 2003 on community-based social marketing (54kb)

The promotional flyer is a first draft (105kb)currently being finalised.

The dates and times for Doug's workshops are:

  • Christchurch - Thursday 13 November 9am-4pm
  • Wellington - Monday 17 November 10am-5pm
  • Auckland - Friday 21 November 9am-4pm

He will also be bringing copies of his book that could be available for $20-30 (depending on freight costs and exchange rates) and these will be on sale at the workshops.
